Tongwei County Government

Tongwei County is located in the southeast region of Gansu Province. By the end of 2010, Tongwei County had a population of 464,400 inhabitants with an average income per capita of RMB 1,390 (EUR 126). Tongwei County is beset with geophysical problems including severe droughts and lack of arable land; only approximately 42% of the 2,012.7 square kilometers of land in Tongwei County is suitable for agriculture. Much of the arable farmland is in the form of terraced plots along mountain ranges first introduced in the 1980s land reforms; the relatively small plots and uneven terrain forces farmers to use traditional and less efficient methods of crop cultivation. PlaNet Finance China and the Tongwei County Government have had a long-standing partnership, initiated by the Tongwei I - Renewable Energy Project, and continued in the Tongwei II - Rural Isolation to Market Integration Project.
